Agricultural Manure – Solid-Liquid Separation & Process Optimization

Project Overview

East to West Consulting supported the commissioning, testing, and process optimization of a high-capacity decanter centrifuge for the mechanical solid-liquid separation of agricultural manure.

The objective was to establish a stable operating window while maximizing solids dewatering, maintaining high liquid quality, and optimizing overall centrifuge performance.

Process Optimization

During the performance testing, the feed rate was progressively increased while key operating parameters were monitored and adjusted, including:

  • Bowl speed
  • Differential speed
  • Centrifuge torque
  • Polymer dosing
  • Motor load
  • Vibration
  • Solids discharge quality
  • Separated liquid quality

Testing demonstrated stable operation across a wide range of hydraulic loading conditions, with throughput reaching approximately 27 m³/h during the trial.

Key Results

The optimized operating conditions produced:

High Throughput
The system successfully processed up to approximately 27 m³/h during performance testing.

Excellent Separation
Very good liquid clarification was maintained while producing dry and stable separated solids.

Optimized Centrifuge Loading
The testing identified an effective operating range where solids dryness, liquid clarity, and mechanical stability were well balanced.

Efficient Operating Speed
Approximately 2,000 rpm bowl speed was sufficient to achieve strong separation performance. Increasing speed further did not provide a meaningful process improvement.

Stable Mechanical Performance
Motor load and vibration were monitored throughout the testing to ensure that process optimization remained within appropriate mechanical operating conditions.

Process Improvement Opportunities

The evaluation also identified opportunities for further automation and optimization, particularly through:

  • Automated polymer preparation and dosing
  • Feed solids concentration monitoring
  • Torque-based process control
  • Polymer consumption optimization
  • Feed, liquid, and solids laboratory analysis
  • Nutrient and solids mass-balance development

These improvements can help create a more consistent process while reducing chemical consumption and improving overall operating efficiency.

Potential Applications

The demonstrated approach can be applied to a variety of agricultural and industrial organic waste streams, including:

Livestock Manure | Agricultural Sludge | Digestate | Food Processing Residuals | Organic Waste Streams

Mechanical separation can also be integrated with downstream sludge drying or nutrient-recovery technologies to further reduce material volume and improve the handling and potential beneficial reuse of separated solids.

Conclusion

The project demonstrated that properly optimized decanter centrifuge technology can provide an effective and scalable solution for agricultural manure treatment.

By combining mechanical separation expertise with process optimization, polymer management, and data-driven operating strategies, East to West Consulting helps clients improve dewatering performance, process stability, operating efficiency, and resource recovery potential.
